TRAFFIC POLICEMAN are a neccesary part of the operations of Dhaka. Do they pay any more attention to the policeman than to the traffic lights. Probably more attention to the policeman.

PHOTO PAYBACKS
As I took a photo of this street black-topper, he whipped out his phone from somewhere in his lungi and decided to take a picture of me.

CHAIRS for any event. If you need chairs for a party or football finals, call these guys and they will bring them for you.

KITCHEN of the neighbor of Day 182
I doubt whether this recession has hit him yet, though the price of rice went up a bit.

STREET DWELLER neighbor
Notice this fellows feet sticking out of his shelter. I’m not sure what put this fellow on the street. He has lived here for a long time. Every so often I buy him breakfast. One day I bought him a bag of rice. Later I saw him filling plastic bottles with the rice. I noticed that every grain he spilled was picked up to be used. I had wondered how he would survive Cyclone Sidr in 2007, but when the storm calmed I saw that he and his shelter were ok.

VEGETABLES on street vendor’s Van Gari. I haven’t tried hurrying to the street from our 9th floor apartment to buy vegetables when I hear them yelling “Torkari!” “Torkari” is curried food. These vegetables are cooked with whatever kind of curry is being prepared. I have however bought some on the street if I see them when I am walking.

BLACK-TOPPING continued. Here is a lady worker who keeps feeding sawdust into the fire to heat up the gravel, tar, etc. mixture. There are other fires to heat up the tar to pour into this mixture.

BLACK-TOPPING on a street in Iqbal Road. This street has been one of the roughest streets, and finally it is being blacktopped! I posted this for my friend Paul Troyer, who is a black-topper in Ohio.

NEPALI LADY
This lady was walking down the path beside where we were taking a break. I had just given some children some pencils. Her and her friend kind of stopped and hung around. Our guide then told me that they also want a pencil. They stayed around awhile and she enjoyed the little butt of a cigarette she had left. It was down to 1/3 inch but when she dropped it, she picked it up and was going to enjoy it to the end!

ALICE having a discussion with our porter and guide, during our trek in the foothills of the Himalayas.

DRINKING TEA
I decided to interrupt the Nepal photos with this photo my friend took of me sipping Bengali tea during a photo shoot in Old Dhaka. A bus driver who ran the route from Holmes Co., Ohio to Sarasota, Fl. was discussing me with my Mom in Florida. He said it is the fellow who looks out over the top of his glasses. I guess he was right! I’d like to thank my friend Matthias, who dropped this photo onto my desktop while I was in Nepal.
