SHUBHO NABO BARSO to all my Benglai friends. Tomorrow is Poila Baisakh, New Year’s Day in Bangladesh. It is traditional to wear red, which I am sure will be no different tomorrow.
Ladies already clad in red on New Year’s Eve.
EKUSHI FEBRUARY, AND INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY! MY WIFE, ALICE, AND I HAD our faces painted which is a tradition on holidays. We both had the Shohid Minar (language martyrs memorial) painted on our faces and Alice had the Bangladesh national flag painted on her hand. This is the day in 1952 when some students were martyred who were protesting because Pakistan didn’t want Bangla as one of the national languages. At this time Alice and I were 3 1/2 years old.
AMADER KAJER LOKER PORIBAR! Oops, I better translate. This is our house-helper and her family. (L to R) Shaheen’s son, Sultan, Shaheen (our house-helper), her daughter, Pinky (Sultana), and Shaheen’s Mother
They are standing in the doorway of Shaheen’s one-room dwelling in one of the many Bihari camps in Dhaka. Sultan was dressed up to celebrate the festival, Muharram. The festival commemorates the martyrdom of the prophet Mohammed’s grandson- Hazrat Imam Hussein.
HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our friends and acquaintances! We trust it will be a good year for you and your families. I received a number of texts, from either the phone company or friends, which I really enjoyed so I will share them with you.

Drinking a cold drink at the “Coffee Club” coffee shop, in Kuala Lumpur. The shop had just opened the day before!
ALICE READING IN THE EVENING in the relaxing area beneath our lumbung. We stayed at Hotel Lumbung Damuh for the last five nights in Bali, including Christmas Eve and Christmas. It was a very relaxing place, with the background of the waves hitting the shore just 30 yards from our lumbung (Balinese style home on pillars)!
