COMMON MYNA BIRD

THIS MYNA BIRD WAS EASY TO CAPTURE WITH MY CANON 70-300 LENS.

WHAT'S UP?

THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN AT THE TEA RESORT NEAR SRI MONGOL, BANGLADESH.

Rufous-Necked Laughing Thrush!

HAPPY EASTER!

I PHOTOGRAPHED THIS TIA PAKI (Bangla name) at Block D, Lalmatia, Dhaka!  Different times this bird showed up and I was without my 70-300 Canon IS lens.  I used auto focus and when looking at the photos, I wondered if I would have gotten a sharper image with manual focus! So it goes.  I saw an ad which showed the price of this bird at 5,00o taka (62.50 USD).

2012 Day 46

The Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybridus) is a seabird of the tern family Sternidae. This bird has a number of geographical races, differing mainly in size and minor plumage details.

C. h. hybridus breeds in warmer parts of Europe and Asia.  This info from Wikipedia

2012 Day 40

LOOKING FOR SARUS CRANE SOUTH OF THE ANG TRAPAENG THMOR RESERVOIR in Cambodia.  The guide said I should wear a long-sleeved shirt. I went to buy the night before going out and I like this white shirt so I bought it, with some hesitation.  He was kind of shocked because it would make it difficult to sneak up on Eld deer or Sarus Crane in a white shirt!  I had a long-sleeved shirt with me to wear for arrival in Bangladesh but thought it too thick for Cambodia.  I also noticed in the morning it was very similar to the guide’s shirt! I put on the driver’s police jacket to help cover the bright white shirt.  So it goes.

OPEN BILLED STORK

The Asian Openbill or Asian Openbill StorkAnastomus oscitans, is a large wading bird in thestork family Ciconiidae. It is a resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from India and Sri Lankaeast to Southeast Asia.

Asian Openbill Stork is a broad-winged soaring bird, which relies on moving between thermals of hot air for sustained flight. Like all storks, it flies with its neck outstretched. It is relatively small for a stork at 68 cm length. They breed near inland wetlands and build stick nest in trees, typically laying 2-6 eggs.

Breeding adults are all white except for the black wing flight feathers, red legs and dull yellow-grey bill. The mandibles do not meet except at the tip, and this gives rise to the species’ name. Non-breeding adults have the white of the plumage replaced by off-white. Young birds have brown tinge to the plumage.

The Asian Openbill Stork, like most of its relatives, walks slowly and steadily on the ground, feeding on molluscsfrogs and large insects.  from Wikipedia

Day 284

RED-VENTED BULBUL, Pycnonotus Cafer (Linnaeus).  I photographed this bird at the Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, Kolkata’s Little Secret. You can see it’s website at:  http://www.kolkatabirds.com/ckbs.htm  I identified it with several books including From “The Book of Indian Birds Salim Ali and “A Photographic Guide to Birds of Bangladesh” by Ronald R. Halder.  One of my friends is a friend of Ron, and has at least one photo in Harder’s book.  The book by Halder I have is actually an autographed copy I borrowed from a friend.

Day 278

BEFORE TRAVELING TO KOLKATA I LOOKED UP SOME “BIRDINGPALS” on their website.     I contacted Arka Sarkar of Calcutta and he mentioned that he planned to go to  Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary. You can see it’s website at:  http://www.kolkatabirds.com/ckbs.htm

I would like to thank Arka for the enjoyable morning with him and his birding friends.  The one birder was a Pathologist, and others were workers in the laboratory. Arka is an IT worker.   I decided not to wait till I had all the photos post processed and the birds identified to post.  Hopefully that will come in the near future.
