Day 205

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUSTIN

Last night we celebrated Austin’s (July 19 B.D.) and Dustin’s (July 24 B.D.).  Austin turned 36 and Dustin 34 years old.  Each blowing out their candle with one blow.  It was a Pistacchio cake.  Of course Alice fixed her excellent smoked chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, as well as hot and cold vegetables.   It was a good time to catch up with Austin’s who had just returned from Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday evening.

Day 199

CHAPATIS in the making.  This fellow in the Mohammadia Housing section of Dhaka came to the tea stand I was at and wanted me to take a photo of him and his wife as she was making chapatis (flat bread).  Very tasty, in fact I had some for lunch at a friends house.

Day 195

MUTTON CURRY, a very tasty Bengali dish was prepared by my friend’s (fellow footballer) Mother for all the football players to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.  We ate this along with porotas and a special cake.  Halim’s Mother is a wonderful cook.  I’ve had two meals in their home, and he just called last night and wants me to come sometime and bring my wife.

Day 185

INDEPENDENCE DAY for the U.S.A.  It’s amazing to think that the U.S. was only 195 years old when Bangladesh became a nation!!  We missed the fireworks usually a part of this day, but there were another kind of fireworks as the Remian Raiders celebrated their latest tournament win with a great meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken!!!

Champions celebrating!

Day 184

KITCHEN of the neighbor of Day 182

Day 181

VEGETABLES on street vendor’s Van Gari.  I haven’t tried hurrying to the street from our 9th floor apartment to buy vegetables when I hear them yelling “Torkari!”  “Torkari” is curried food.  These vegetables are cooked with whatever kind of curry is being prepared.  I have however bought some on the street if I see them when I am walking.

Veggies for Sale!

Day 174

CORNBREAD – Nepali style!

This morning I went to a local hotel (restaurant) and had a great breakfast of bhaji (spicy veg) and nan-ruti (one kind of Bengali bread) for 20 tk (30 cents U.S.D).  I decided to show you the cornbread as they fix it in Nepal.  This piece of bread, made with corn meal,  is hollow.  and  is quite tasty.
