Day 281

ANTIQUE COINS FOR SALE NEAR NEW MARKET, KOLKATA, INDIA.    Collecting coins is a cheap way to bring home a souvenir from other countries.  I have bought some while in Darjeeling, India but didn’t buy any of these.  Are there any of my friends who collect coins? It is interesting how the coins are displayed in an artistic manner.  I see the same thing in vegetable and fruit stalls.  There is nothing random in the way the product is displayed.  It’s like a work of art. I like it.  I know I have a stamp collecting friend in Sioux Lookout, Ontario!!

Day 280

ROASTED CORN-ON-THE-COB IN KOLKATA near New Market.  It is not the same as corn-on-the-cob in the U.S. but has similarities.  I’m not sure it is sweet corn, and also it is great with some hot spices sprinkled on the ear.

Day 279

BIGGER THAN LIFE: PANTALOON ADS WITH LOCALS RELAXING in front oblivious as to what is behind them.

I was looking for a grocery store and it was located on a top floor of Pantaloons.

Day 278

BEFORE TRAVELING TO KOLKATA I LOOKED UP SOME “BIRDINGPALS” on their website.     I contacted Arka Sarkar of Calcutta and he mentioned that he planned to go to  Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary. You can see it’s website at:  http://www.kolkatabirds.com/ckbs.htm

I would like to thank Arka for the enjoyable morning with him and his birding friends.  The one birder was a Pathologist, and others were workers in the laboratory. Arka is an IT worker.   I decided not to wait till I had all the photos post processed and the birds identified to post.  Hopefully that will come in the near future.

Day 277

KOLKATA HAS TRASH CANS IN FRONT OF STREET-SIDE EATERIES!  I should have turned the can to show that I had found a Diet Pepsi and enjoyed it.

Day 276

COBBLER’S TOOLS!  It looks like the cobbler is taking a break. I didn’t need my sandals repaired, but I took advantage of the photo-op.  It looks like I should have had more depth of field (DOF) to get the foreground in focus.

Day 275

SUBWAY RESTAURANT IN KOLKATA near New Market.  This is something we don’t have in Dhaka.  We definitely savored these subs several times while in Kolkata.  Alice like the veggie subs, and I liked the chicken subs, whether Teryaki, Tikka, or Tandoori!!

As seen from across the street.

Yes, always fresh!

Day 274

THIS GUARD WAS TOO LATE IN LETTING ME KNOW HE DIDN’T WANT A PHOTO TAKEN.  I really would have liked a scene where he was sitting relaxed in front of the ad, but so it goes.

Day 273

FELLOWS ENJOYING TOASTED SANDWICHES ON CORNER NEAR NEWMARKET, KOLKATA, INDIA.  I was many times tempted to buy one, but it was too close to the Subway and McDonald’s restaurants!

Day 272

HERE IS A TYPICAL SITE IN KOLKATA.  Hand drawn rickshaw and it’s human puller waiting for a passenger.

Day 270

YELLOW CABS OF KOLKATA (Calcutta), India.  Ever since I saw photos of my grandson sitting on the hood of a Kolkata cab, I wanted to visit the city.  I wasn’t disappointed, since the city is still full of these nice looking cabs.   Is it nostalgia thinking of the old cars in the U.S. that I was place on for photos?  Maybe, though these are still being produced so maybe they haven’t changed over the years.

This is my first photo of our 10 day visit to Kolkata.  I had forgotten my card reader, so had to wait until returning to Dhaka to post photos.  Coming home God provided protection for my laptop.  While navigating the rough street to the ferry ghat my backpack with the computer in it came hurtling down on to the floor of the bus!  I had it wrapped in two pieces of clothing for protection.  Upon arriving home I saw that the battery had started to come apart from the computer.  I shoved the battery back into place, started up the computer and there appeared to be no damage!  A blessing to be thankful for indeed!

Hope you don’t mind, as there will be many more Kolkata photos in the days to come.

Day 174

HERE I AM AT WORK EITHER checking e-mail or sorting photos.  This is in the dining room of the Cherrapungee Holiday Resort. Alice did get her point-and-shoot and did shooting on this trip.  It’s one way to get my photo on the blog!  We actually checked out and headed back to our Hotel in Syhlet, Bamgladesh yesterday morning.
